Reclaimed Cedar Planter Box

I made my first planter box in 2020 as a way to use up reclaimed cedar from rebuilding my fence. The fence rebuild is still underway as I was stymied by high lumber prices and no real need to replace more than I did. I’ll write a post about the fence, but short story was I had a skunk problem and didn’t want to deal with the dog getting sprayed again. But the point of talking about the fence is that the boards were mostly good excluding the bottom 4 to 8 inches that were rotted out. I couldn’t just throw them all away, I’m too frugal for that, so I came up with projects to use the boards and give them new life. Hence, planter boxes.

I wanted a place to plant some herbs and add dimension to my yard. I did some research and saw lots of planter designs, but being the woodworker I am I wanted to add details to my design to set it apart and give it a custom look. Since building my first box in 2020, I have since built half a dozen for clients and love making them. They look nice, are easy to make, and don’t cost much since the wood is basically free. If you don’t have your own fence that needs replacing, just find a local fence builder and they’ll likely give it to you, you just have to put in the work.

Hope you enjoy the pictures of my planters. I’m hoping they leave you with the desire to know more about how I make them because I am planning to publish a full build of these planters. It’s a work in progress, I realized I wanted to share more pictures than what I currently have so you’ll have to stay tuned if you want to see the step by step process.
