Building a Love of Woodworking: Friday Update
It seems most of my recent Friday updates have been a mash up of multiple projects. I guess I have a lot going on.
This week I have two projects in progress in the shop. The world’s largest Lazy Susan is currently in clamps and will be cut into a circle soon.
The second project which started after I began the Lazy Susan and finished first was a bird house. I have a full article about the bird house next week, but you dedicated Friday Update viewers get a sneak peak by watching the video now.
Next week I’ll share more about this build. I hope you enjoyed the video! Now it’s time to switch topics to, the Lazy Susan.
I started last week, and continued into this week. This build should be easier than I’m making it, but time is working against me. This weekend is Mother’s Day, next weekend it’s my son’s birthday, so last weekend was prep time to get the patio ready for company.
That meant power washing, gutter cleaning, weed pulling, and more. My wife and I split duties and got it done, but were exhausted by the end of the weekend and I had no energy left to work on this project.
Entering the week I did some final jointing, and flattening to prepare for glue up. Gluing went smoothly because I used a trick. I did these glue ups in batches. It takes longer to do it this way but it is far easier to wrangle 3 boards together, with no seams and flat surfaces than it is to do 9.
Ultimately, I sacrificed calendar days by doing it this way. Instead of doing one glue up and being done, I had to do two, taking twice as much dry time. I still think it saved me time in the long run as I will have less clean up to do to get the final board flat.
So that’s it, the Lazy Susan is together, but not lazy yet, nor looking like a Susan. Next week she will get cut into a circle, have a channel cut for the lazy hardware, and have her face sanded smooth.
Then the real test begins, finish. Stay tuned to see the challenge I have to overcome. Cliff hanger ending, but I promise I’ll share more when I figure it out.
